Windsurfing: Bradfield Wind Direction: SW Wind Stength: 10-25kts Surf / Sea State: flat Air Temperature: warm Sea Temperature: warm Weather: Sunny / cloud Max Speed: 11 kts (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 6nm (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)
After 3 5***** foils at Bradfield, it ended today with 2 hrs of slogging (
1 x star!) despite x gusts of 25kts! SW is not good here as offshore, so
all the wind is on the far side. The pro's were chasing each other all over
the river and they look close and competitive. Low turn out today, 2 fins 3
foils and one at Wrabness. The gusty winds force the pro's on 8m so went
for a new sail 7.4 foil specific sail. That was the first mistake, its too
small a cut, handles like a wave sail, great if you are light, but bad for
my 105kg bulk.
To compound the problem, and 2nd mistake, I decided to change my normal
foil set up to test lots of peoples theories - 900 x 255 -2 with the 115+
fuse (my normal is 1100 x 300/500 + 1 or 0 with either the 95 + fuse or the
115 + which everyone said I would eventually bend. Cant see it myself.
My setup is slower, but I have clocked 20.8 kts and 21kts in good wind,
when the 900 would have been good and faster.
The 900 did not sustain a flight in 2 hours, and with the sail generating
take off speed of just 11 kts on my GW60 watch, it was a small disaster in
setups! I switched spacers to +1 but didn't notice any difference. As the
river is tidal, I couldn't be bothered to rush change sail and foil setup,
but learnt a lot, what not to do!
Now sorting returning to my Duotone S pace 8.3 to give me that long boom
forward drive of s decent slalom sail. As am not bothered about cracking
foil gybes for now, these light weight foil recreational sails are not for
me. I need to return to all day flying, with loads of power of the back
foot. Have never pumped so much, as today, to break the cycle and get a
full lift, but the energy was wasted, although the work out was as good as
a gym day. The Patrick 100 is a fantastic board when powered up, as it has
a really low stall speed under the 1100 wing, so will return to that. Nice
day, and someone brought crisp and drinks to brighten the day. DC and Nick
continue to be very fast and competitive. Dont know who won.
